Monterey is in the Upper Cumberland plateau and is known as Putnam County's "mountain town.” It is the perfect hideaway from the busy city centers and sits at an elevation level of around 1,770 feet. Monterey is located between the major cities of Knoxville and Nashville, both of which are easily accessible via Interstate 40. 
 
Monterey is rife with museums, glorious mountain views, locally owned eateries, chic boutiques, and many more intriguing destinations. A quaint, historic town tucked away at the start of Tennessee's mountains, Monterey is the ideal locale to get away from it all. The air is cooler, the drives are gorgeous, and nature is plentiful.

Local Lifestyle

Life in the mountains has plenty of allure for the residents who tend to be nature enthusiasts and want all-day access to mountains and camping sights. There are many locally-owned businesses to stop in and take a break from outdoor recreational activities. Many tourists visit Monterey yearly to visit the mountains, but the year-round residents are lucky enough to go outside and explore whenever the urge arises. In the mountains, people feel removed from the chaos of modern life and can luxuriate in nature.
 

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping 

Monterey has small businesses that cater to the outdoor lifestyle and are often family-run. The Front Porch is downtown and serves classic American food to its patrons. The Lovely Brew is a quaint, adorable coffee shop with gourmet coffee. 
 
Laurel Mountain Bakery sells fresh, handmade bakery items. Monterey Farmer’s Market is held on Saturdays throughout the summer and is an excellent chance to pick up locally grown items, crafts, and home goods supplies. 
 
The Wildflowers Boutique involves a short drive to Knoxville, but many Monterey residents make the trip because of the gorgeous pieces found inside. 
 
The Garden Inn Bed & Breakfast is unique to Monterey and has amazing views of dramatic cliffs and natural rock formations. 
 

Things to Do

Monterey’s Standing Stone Monument is an important historical marker in the town. Residents gather near the monument on the Standing Stone Day Festival and celebrate Cherokee culture. Also at the monument, families participate in the Monterey Easter Egg Hunt and find eggs hidden all over the park.
 
The Meadows is a stately ranch and destination wedding site for those looking to have a rustic, romantic wedding in the mountains. Spacious Skies - Belle Ridge is a scenic overlook with a gazebo and another place worth visiting. Freedom Fest is in early July, and concertgoers enjoy the exclusive lineups at The Old Gray.
